‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?

Phototherapy is certainly having a moment. You can now buy light-emitting tools for everything from skin conditions and wrinkles to sore muscles and periodontal issues, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device equipped with miniature red light sources, marketed by the company as “a major advance for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. According to its devotees, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health.

Understanding the Evidence

“It feels almost magical,” says Paul Chazot, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Naturally, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Sunlight-imitating lamps frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to elevate spirits during colder months. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Types of Light Therapy

Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. During advanced medical investigations, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, finding the right frequency is key. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, spanning from low-energy radio waves to high-energy gamma radiation. Potential UVB consequences, like erythema or pigmentation, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – signifying focused frequency bands – which decreases danger. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, meaning intensity is regulated,” explains the dermatologist. Essentially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where regulations may be lax, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Colored light diodes, he notes, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, improve circulatory function, oxygen utilization and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Studies are available,” comments the expert. “But it’s not conclusive.” Regardless, given the plethora of available tools, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, ideal distance from skin surface, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. There are lots of questions.”

Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, a microbe associated with acne. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, explains the specialist, “it’s commonly used in cosmetic clinics.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he observes, however for consumer products, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I was quite suspicious. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that nobody believed did anything biological.”

Its beneficial characteristic, however, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration.

Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, producing fuel for biological processes. “Every cell in your body has mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” explains the neuroscientist, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is consistently beneficial.”

Using 1070nm wavelength, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In limited quantities these molecules, explains the expert, “triggers guardian proteins that maintain organelle health, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”

All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: antioxidant, swelling control, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.

Present Investigation Status and Expert Assessments

Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he reports, approximately 400 participants enrolled in multiple trials, incorporating his preliminary American studies
